Google Takes Action: Pausing Gemini AI Image Generator Over Historical Accuracy Concerns

On Thursday, Google announced it is pausing its Gemini AI image generation feature. This decision comes after the chatbot generated historically inaccurate and racially diverse images.

Users on social media have been complaining that the AI tool produces images of historical figures, such as the U.S. Founding Fathers, deeming it as inaccurate. “Moreover, when users requested Gemini to provide an image of a Nazi-era German soldier. “So the chatbot declined.“I can’t create images yet so I’m not able to help you with that,” Gemini replied.

“Each time it was queried, similar responses were consistently provided by Gemini AI. When prompted to display a picture of a White person, concerns about reinforcing harmful stereotypes and generalizations based on race were cited, leading to the AI’s declination.”

However, when prompted to display images celebrating the diversity and achievements of White people, the AI expressed hesitation in fulfilling that particular request.

“These images drew attention and triggered discussions about whether the company was perceived as racist against white people.”

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Wednesday, Google mentioned that the AI feature can “generate a wide range of people. And that’s generally a good thing because people around the world use it.” But it said that the software feature is “missing the mark here,”. Also adding that the tech giant is “working to improve these kinds of depictions immediately.”

On Thursday Google said in an Updated statement on X, “While we do this, we’re going to pause the image generation of people. And will re-release an improved version soon”.

“Google introduced the image generator tool, initially named Bard and now known as Gemini, at the beginning of February.” It is encountering difficulties just as Google is striving to compete with Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

Google has rolled out three product versions with varying subscription tiers. These are Gemini Ultra, designed for highly complex tasks; Gemini Pro, ideal for scaling across a broad range of tasks; and Gemini Nano, the most efficient option for on-device tasks.
