Click the button and allow microphone access to begin.
Tip: if the bar moves but you sound bad on calls, the problem is usually mic distance or the app's own settings – use Record to hear yourself.
Quick answer: Click Start mic test, allow microphone access, and speak. If the level bar moves and the waveform reacts, your mic works. Use Record & play back to hear exactly how you sound to others. Audio is processed live in your browser and never uploaded.
Before a job interview, an online class or a gaming session, the last thing you want is “we can't hear you.” This mic test uses your browser's built-in audio engine (the Web Audio API) to show a live input level and waveform, so you can confirm in seconds that Windows, macOS, Android or iPhone is actually picking up sound from the right microphone.
The most useful part is the playback check: seeing a bar move proves the mic captures something, but recording five seconds and listening back reveals the problems a meter can't – crackling, echo, a muffled headset boom arm, or the laptop picking up its own fan. Everything runs locally on your device; no audio is sent to us or anyone else.
How to test your microphone online
- Click Start mic test and choose Allow when your browser asks for microphone permission.
- Speak normally. The level meter and live waveform should react to your voice.
- If you have several microphones, pick another one from the dropdown to compare.
- Click Record, talk for a few seconds, then Stop and press play to hear yourself exactly as others hear you.
Why use the GadgetsFocus mic test?
- Live level meter and real-time waveform so you can see input instantly.
- Record-and-playback check to judge real sound quality, not just signal presence.
- Microphone picker for laptops with multiple inputs (built-in, headset, USB, Bluetooth).
- 100% private – audio is analysed in your browser and never uploaded or stored.
- Works on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone in any modern browser.
Honest limitations
- Your browser only shows the mic after you grant permission – if you clicked Block earlier, re-enable it from the padlock/permissions icon in the address bar.
- This page must load over HTTPS for microphone access (it does on gadgetsfocus.com).
- The test proves the browser receives audio; it can't detect problems inside a specific app (Zoom, Discord, OBS) that has its own input settings or is muted at the app level.
- Bluetooth headsets may switch to a lower-quality “call” profile while the mic is active – that's a Bluetooth limitation, not a fault.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my mic not working even here?
Work down this list: (1) the physical mute switch on the headset or keyboard, (2) browser permission – click the padlock icon and set Microphone to Allow, (3) the operating system's privacy settings (Windows Settings → Privacy → Microphone; macOS System Settings → Privacy & Security), (4) the wrong device selected – try each entry in the dropdown above.
Is my voice uploaded anywhere?
No. The meter, waveform and recording all run inside your browser using the Web Audio API. Nothing is transmitted to our server or any third party, and the recording disappears when you leave the page.
Why do I sound quiet or muffled?
Move the mic 10–20 cm from your mouth, check the input level/boost in your OS sound settings, and make sure a foam cover or dust isn't blocking the capsule. On laptops, tape or a case sometimes covers the tiny mic hole.
Does this work for headset and Bluetooth mics?
Yes – any input your operating system exposes appears in the device dropdown. Bluetooth mics work, though many drop to a compressed call profile while recording, which is normal.
Can this test my mic for Zoom, Teams or Discord?
It confirms your hardware and browser input work, which rules out the most common failures. If the mic works here but not in an app, the problem is that app's input device selection or its own mute button.
