Verdict: Android does not provide one battery-health or cycle-count screen on every phone. Current Pixel 8a and later models can show cycle count under About phone and battery health under Battery settings, while Samsung’s supported route is the Samsung Members battery diagnostic; other brands and older models may expose less information.
Battery health is an estimate of remaining capacity compared with the battery when new. Cycle count measures accumulated use, including partial cycles. Neither number alone proves a fault: temperature, app load, signal strength, charging accessories, and software can also change daily runtime and charging speed.
Use the correct method for the phone

How to check battery cycle count on a supported Pixel
Google’s current instructions for Pixel 8a and later are Settings > About phone > Battery information. The page can include cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. Google defines one cycle as a total 100% discharge and recharge accumulated across partial use; for example, two separate 50% discharges add up to one cycle.
Google’s Pixel battery guide says Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold are designed to retain up to 80% capacity for about 800 cycles, while Pixel 8a and later are rated for about 1,000 cycles. These are model-family design references, not a promise that every battery will reach the same day, runtime, or calendar age.
How to check Pixel battery health
On Pixel 8a and later, open Settings > Battery > Battery health. Google documents the status as Normal, Reduced, or Unavailable; supported phones can also show an estimated battery-capacity percentage. Google marks capacity below 80% as Reduced and recommends considering battery replacement.
Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 8, and Pixel 8 Pro do not show that same official battery-health status, according to Google. That exception is why an article cannot promise the menu on every phone merely because it runs the same Android version.
How to check a Samsung Galaxy battery
Open Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics, then run the Battery status test. Samsung currently describes the result as Normal, Weak, or Bad on supported devices. The diagnostic is a service-oriented status, not necessarily an exact cycle counter or maximum-capacity percentage.
Samsung also exposes Settings > Battery > Battery protection on supported software. Current choices can include Basic, Adaptive, and Maximum. Samsung says Adaptive can stop at 80% and switch modes before you wake, while Maximum stops at a level the user selects on current supported devices. The available options may differ by model and software release.
Why ADB is not a universal battery meter
Commands such as adb shell dumpsys battery can show current charge state, power source, temperature, voltage, and other fields, but the output is device-dependent. A cycle_count file under the Linux power-supply path may exist on some devices and be missing or inaccessible on others. Even when a field exists, the manufacturer may calculate or expose it differently.
For that reason, this refresh does not promise an exact cycle count or remaining-capacity value from one command on every Android phone. Enabling USB debugging also creates a trusted connection to a computer; authorize only a computer you control and turn debugging off when finished.
Use charge limits without expecting a fixed lifespan
Google documents Settings > Battery > Battery health > Charging optimization for supported Pixel phones. Pixel 6a and later can offer an 80% limit, while Adaptive Charging delays the final part of charging based on learned habits. Google notes that a Pixel using the 80% limit may periodically charge fully to keep capacity readings accurate.
Charge limits reduce time spent at a high state of charge, but they do not guarantee that a battery will last a specific number of years. Heat, depth of discharge, charging frequency, manufacturing variation, workload, and calendar aging all matter. Use the limit when it fits your daily range needs, and disable it temporarily when a longer day requires the full battery.
Battery health, runtime, and drain are different
A phone can have a Normal battery status and still drain quickly because of a weak mobile signal, a stuck app, navigation, gaming, camera use, hotspot use, or post-update background activity. Likewise, slow charging can reflect temperature protection or an incompatible adapter rather than reduced capacity. If the phone overheats while charging, use our charging heat checklist and stop using damaged accessories.
When battery replacement is the right next step
Consider authorized service when the official status is Reduced, Weak, or Bad; the phone shuts down unexpectedly under ordinary load; runtime has fallen substantially after other causes are excluded; or the device has reached the maker’s rated service threshold. Back up important data before repair.
If the battery is swollen, the display or back cover is lifting, or there is an unusual odor or heat, stop charging and arrange service promptly. Do not press a lifted panel back into place or puncture the cell.
