“SoftBank Acquires British AI Chipmaker Graphcore in Strategic Move”

SoftBank Acquires Leading British AI Chipmaker Graphcore in $600 Million Deal

SoftBank has announced its acquires of Graphcore, a leading British AI chipmaker, in a deal valued at approximately $600 million. This acquisition marks Graphcore’s transition to becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of SoftBank, further cementing the conglomerate’s foothold in the UK tech scene.

A Strategic Move in the UK Tech Market

This latest move by SoftBank is not its first significant investment in the UK. In 2016, the company made headlines with its controversial acquisition of British chip designer Arm. However, the Graphcore purchase, although smaller in scale, highlights SoftBank’s continued interest in the burgeoning UK tech sector. Despite the deal’s lower valuation compared to Graphcore’s total funding of around $700 million, it underscores the strategic value SoftBank sees in Graphcore’s technology.

Graphcore’s Continued Operations and Growth

Graphcore will maintain its operational independence, continuing to operate under its established name and retaining its headquarters in Bristol, UK. The company will also keep its offices in Cambridge, London, Gdansk, and Hsinchu. This arrangement signals SoftBank’s commitment to preserving Graphcore’s established presence and operational framework.

Nigel Toon, co-founder and CEO of Graphcore, expressed his enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating: “This is a tremendous endorsement of our team and their ability to build truly transformative AI technologies at scale, as well as a great outcome for our company.”

Toon also highlighted the ongoing demand for AI compute power and the necessity to improve efficiency, resilience, and computational capabilities to fully harness AI’s potential.

Revolutionary AI Technology

Graphcore is renowned for its “Intelligence Processing Units” (IPUs) – accelerators specifically designed for AI workloads. Alongside its cutting-edge hardware, Graphcore offers a comprehensive software stack that enables developers to effectively utilize its technology. In 2020, a Graphcore device outperformed an Nvidia A100 GPU, and in another instance, its hardware halved the time required for GPU-based drug discovery tasks.

Despite its technological prowess, Graphcore has faced financial challenges, reporting a revenue of just $2.7 million in 2022, a 46 percent year-on-year decrease, against operating expenses of $206.8 million.

SoftBank’s Vision for the Future

Vikas J. Parekh, Managing Partner at SoftBank Investment Advisers, commented: “Society is embracing the opportunities offered by foundation models, generative AI applications, and new approaches to scientific discovery. Next-generation semiconductors and compute systems are essential in the AGI journey, and we’re pleased to collaborate with Graphcore in this mission.”

Parekh’s mention of AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) suggests that SoftBank views Graphcore’s technology as pivotal in advancing AI systems that can match or exceed human-level intelligence across diverse tasks.

A Boost for the UK High-Tech Economy

Graphcore has established itself as a leading employer in the UK’s high-tech economy, committed to creating high-skilled jobs across various disciplines. The acquisition by SoftBank is expected to provide Graphcore with substantial resources and opportunities for expansion.

Increasing Competition in the AI Chip Market

The acquisition reflects the intensifying competition in the AI chip market, where major players like NVIDIA, Intel, and AMD are vying for dominance. As AI continues to permeate various sectors of the economy and society, the demand for specialized AI hardware is anticipated to grow. Integrating Graphcore into SoftBank’s portfolio positions both companies to capitalize on this burgeoning trend.

The SoftBank acquires of Graphcore by signifies a strategic investment in advanced AI technology and the UK’s tech industry. This move positions both companies to leverage the growing demand for specialized AI hardware and expand their market presence.
