Phone Microphone Not Working on Calls? How to Fix It (2026 Guide)

Verdict: If the other person cannot hear you during a phone call, immediately check for pocket lint blocking the bottom microphone port. If it is clean, use the GadgetsFocus Mic Test tool to determine if the hardware has failed or if a rogue app has hijacked the microphone permission.

“Hello? Can you hear me?” It is incredibly frustrating when you can hear the person on the other end of the line perfectly, but they hear nothing but silence or muffled static. Before you assume your phone is broken, follow this three-step diagnostic process to isolate and fix the problem.

Step 1: The Hardware Diagnostic Test

We need to immediately determine if the physical microphone is dead.
1. Open the GadgetsFocus Mic Test Tool in your mobile browser.
2. Grant the browser permission to access the microphone.
3. Speak clearly into the bottom of your phone.
4. Watch the soundwave visualizer on the screen.
If the waves jump: The physical microphone works perfectly. You have a software or network issue. Proceed to Step 3.
If the line stays flat: The microphone is physically blocked or broken. Proceed to Step 2.

Step 2: The Physical Cleaning (Do It Carefully)

If the Mic Test tool failed, your microphone port is likely clogged. Smartphones have multiple microphones, but the primary one for voice calls is a tiny pinhole located on the bottom edge of the phone, right next to the USB charging port.

After months in your pocket, this pinhole becomes packed with lint, dust, and grime, completely blocking sound waves.
DO NOT use a metal needle or SIM ejector tool to clean it. You will easily puncture the delicate waterproof membrane inside, permanently destroying the mic.
DO USE a wooden toothpick or a soft-bristled toothbrush. Very gently scrape across the surface of the hole to pull the lint out.
– Run the Mic Test tool again to see if the blockage is cleared.

Step 3: Revoke App Permissions (The Software Fix)

If the Mic Test tool proved the hardware is working, but your phone calls are still silent, a third-party app running in the background has hijacked the audio focus.

Both iOS and Android only allow one app to use the microphone at a time. If a poorly coded app (like a third-party camera or voice recorder) is stuck in a loop, it will block the Phone app from accessing the mic.

1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone (on iPhone) or Settings > Security and Privacy > Permission Manager > Microphone (on Android).
2. Look at the list of apps that have access to your microphone.
3. Toggle the permission OFF for every single app except the primary Phone app.
4. Restart your phone and make a test call.

If the call works, you can slowly re-enable microphone permissions for essential apps (like WhatsApp or Instagram) one by one until you find the culprit that is causing the conflict.
